The Concept of this month – August 2021 is called #NameOftheGame.
It is a list of culinary terms which I have came across when I first started to learn about cooking in general and later developed interest in learning World Cuisine.
The culinary world has a lot of interesting lingo – not always English, but very essential to decode if you want your efforts to resemble that PICTURE in the recipe Book.
Most of these cooking terms may feel alien, that doesn’t mean they are difficult. Infact, they are easier than expected. You will find that, usually these words/jargons are in the language of the land, where the dish is originally from. The language could be Persian, Italian, Spanish, French etc. They might indicate either of the following
Method of preparation
OR
Style of serving
OR
Use of the ingredients in a certain manner
For eg. Au Gratin – In French, this term refers to a dish that is baked with a topping of
seasoned bread crumbs and cheese.
Cooking is an ART and learning the exact techniques behind these terminologies is what will take your cooking to the next level.
When we shuffle the pages of those beautifully illustrated Cook Books, we are so much in awe of those dishes and their presentation. Instantly, we want to recreate those awesome recipes in our kitchens. But, sometimes these difficult to understand COOKING TERMINOLOGY can be major hindrance and may make one lose interest altogether.
I too went through this phase in my initial days, when I was keen on learning to cook . At that time I wished I knew someone who I could discuss the recipes with. That would have made things much simpler. Keeping this thought in mind, I have decided to share a few of my experiences, through my blog. If this would help a newbie simplify his/her journey of learning to cook gourmet meals, that would really make me glad.
So, don’t let these jargons deter you from preparing an exotic meal for your family and friends. I too am still learning various cuisines and this amazing WORLD OF FOOD is quite enriching.
I have shortlisted a few CULINARY TERMS and will try and make it fun to learn. Will be sharing the same all through this month.
Do stay connected !
