Drumstick sukke is a healthy dish without a drop oil and tastes so good

Quick & Easy Drumstick Sukke (Goan Style)

The name comes from their resemblance to the musical instrument – Drumsticks ! They are the fruits of the famous and incredibly healthy Moringa tree.

In Goa they call drumsticks as Shengo.

The tender leaves of this plant can also be cooked and they too are extremely nutritious.

You will find the drumsticks being commonly used in the South-Indian sambar (a tangy, sweet and spicy gravy) which is a delicious lip-smacking accompaniment for the famous idlis and dosas.

Moringa is nature’s gift to us.

It is a powerhouse of nutrients. The list of health benefits of this wonderful vegetable can run into pages.   Add them to your curries, veggies, or have them stir-fried. They taste lovely.

Interestingly, I know someone who even makes cutlets out of them.  Will definitely try making it that way and share that recipe too.

This ZERO-OIL AND ZERO-SPICES very quick and easy Goan style drumsticks version is an absolute delight.

A dry preparation, which can be served as a side-dish.  There are NO SPICES except, two chillies and hence the drumsticks’ inherent flavour comes through beautifully.

So, here is the extremely healthy and a simple no-fuss recipe.

Quick & Easy Drumstick Sukke (Goan Style)

Ingredients :

  • 4 -5 Drumsticks
  • 1 large onion finely chopped
  • 1 medium tomato finely chopped
  • 2 Green Chillies (cut into 1-inch pieces)
  • Freshly grated coconut – ½ cup
  • Salt – ½ tsp.
  • Water 25 ml

Method :

  • Wash and peel the drumsticks and cut into 3 inch pieces.
  • In a hot pan add onions, tomatoes and stir.
  • To this add salt and stir till they soften. This will release some moisture. (Do not brown them.)
  • Add the green chillies, drumsticks and water.
  • Give it a stir, cover and cook on low heat for 10 minutes
  • Add the grated coconut cover and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes till the drumsticks are done.

Note : Alternately you can also cook this dish with a little coconut oil (maybe 1/2 tsp).  It imparts a beautiful nutty flavour , giving it a very Goan touch.
