A KITCHEN GARDEN – ALL THE WAY FROM AUSTRALIA
This whole month on Deliciously URS we are bringing to you various ways to get freshest possible food on your table through our CONCEPT OF THE MONTH : FARM-TO-TABLE. Besides visiting the farmers’ market in and around your locality you could also grow your own veggies and herbs. For this we bring you inspiration all the way from Australia
My good friend Daisy who is a science professor, she lives in Sydney – SouthWales. Her subjects include botany & bio-chemistry. Daisy is a die-hard fan of plants and gardening is her hobby. She spends most of her after-work hours in her beautifully maintained kitchen garden.
She grows a variety of herbs and veggies like chillies, tomatoes, curry leaves, Thai Basil etc. She is of the opinion we can use our own space to grow plants which brings us closer to nature, it acts like a therapy. Seeing your plants bloom into flowers and fruits is a different joy altogether. Then finally when the fruits of your labour are on display at the dinner table, you can be proud of yourself. Also, since they are completely organic it takes care of your family’s health too !!
A few tips from Daisy :
1. The biggest tip I would suggest… is setting the place.
2. Seeing that plants are watered as per requirement, coz some plants need less while others need more.
With a minimal investment of around Rs 500 – Rs 1000 you can start growing small vegetables plants / creepers in your homes. And while some vegetables will be available within 15-20 days some may take a couple of months. For eg. Tomatoes & lady fingers may take around 60-65 days to grow, while fenugreek (methi) will take just 20-30 days for the leaves to be harvested.
We hope this article will help you to grow some organic goodness at your home.
